Na een vlotte doorreis via Addis Abeba en Mek’ele, zijn we aangekomen in Adigrat. Alle valiezen zijn uitgeladen, het materiaal staat klaar en zouden we morgen starten met operaties en consultaties!
There are still a few days before our departure to Adigrat for SEE and SMILE ‘S humanitarian mission (10-09-16 till 24-09-16)
This mission is only possible with the initiative, help and great motivation of the Belgian team; Rishan Kahsay- honorary President from “vzw Ethiopia: ikwilleven “and Yohannes Abraha – Minister Counsellor, Public Diplomacy & Political affairs, Ethiopian Embassy Brussels;
and the Ethiopia team; Tigray Regional State Health Bureau and the Tigray Development Association
A memorandum of understanding is maid for improving access and quality of healthcare in Tigray region’s selected hospitals via technical and material support.
We will perform ophthalmic consultations, cataract and glaucoma operations,
dental consultations and care services including dental health education and dental extractions. These services are delivered to those patients in need at the Adigrat Hospital. and other Hospitals in the region.
In addition, SEE and SMILE with their overseas technical, medical equipment and medical supplies will also provide onsite training for health professionals, alongside contributing to the education of local students in Adigrat and other Hospitals of the region.

Procedures
Tonometry:
Tonometry is a procedure to determine the intraocular pressure (Fluid pressure inside the eye). This test is important in evaluating the risk of glaucoma, a series of eye conditions that can cause nerve damage and vision loss.
Physical/clinical examination

Auto refractor
An auto refractor is a computer-controlled machine used during eye examinations. It provides an ‘objective’ measurement of the patients’ refractive error (fault in the focusing of light in the eye, cause of imperfect vision). This machine can give an estimation of the refraction of the eye and needs always to be controlled by subjective refraction. It achieves all this by measuring how light changes as it enters the patients’ eye.
The Slit lamp
An instrument that can project a thin sheet of light into the eye. It’s used in conjunction with a bio microscope. This machine lets the user examine the anterior and posterior segment of the eye, the front and backside of the eye including the eyelids, sclera, conjunctiva, iris, lens and cornea. The slit lamp offers a magnified view of these structures in detail, enabling diagnoses for a variety of conditions. A second lens is used to examine the retina itself.
Visus-examination.
Determining the visual acuity is important in any ophthalmologic examination. The medical term for this is the ‘visus’. The visus of every eye is examined separately, with and without possible correction (glasses or lenses).
Letter card
A white card with black symbols of different sizes is used to determine the patients vision. They can differ in sizes or directions. These are used on predetermined distances to offer an objective point of reference.

Missie Ethiopië:
Ik heb het geluk om voor de eerste keer een missie van see and smile mee te maken. Ik ben zelf niet medisch geschoold en kan vanuit een objectieve kijk het gebeuren bekijken.
Na anderhalve dag ben ik overweldigd Door impressies gevoelens en gedachten. Vooreerst de enorme inzet van zoveel mensen. Maar het meest ben ik geschokt door het menselijk leed en de machteloosheid om zoveel nood te lenigen. De smekende blikken, de zoveel blinde mensen, de kinderen, de armoede, de gelatenheid van de mensen, de geuren en kleuren,
de lange rijen wachtende mensen enzovoort. ..
Maar de vele uitgedeelde brillen, de vele cataractoperaties, de stralende blikken van de geholpen mensen maken de pijn van mijn onmacht weer wat zachter. Eens te meer besef ik in welk bevoorrecht land wij leven.

Missie Ethiopië:
Vertrek groep 2 van de missie,
Alles vlotjes verlopen, gewoon kunnen doorstappen door de controle. Hebben niet eens het paspoort of vliegticket gevraagd.
We hadden met ons allen het juiste profiel.
Enkel wachtrij van 30min aan de check-in balie, straks stijgen we al op, mooi op tijd.
